1. Use tacky glue at tips of toothpicks before inserting
into clay.
2. Keep all clay in airtight zip lock bags so clay does not dry out.
3. Use water to smooth clay before it dries.
4. Use hand lotion (on hands) so clay does not stick to hands.
Step-by-step Instructions:
Turtle:
1. Head - form a 1-inch dk. Green ball into an egg shape. Insert two 4mm "E"
beads into center of head, about 1/4-inch apart. With pointed tip of clay
tool, press three lines above each eye (toward wide end of head) for
eyelashes, and one line on each side of the nose (small end of head).
2. Body - form a 1-1/4-inch dk. Green ball into an egg
shape. Slightly flatten the bottom (wide end) so figure can sit. Insert a
1/2-inch toothpick into top (small end) of body, leaving 1/4-inch extended
out. Secure head onto body.
3. Bottom fins (legs) - form two 3/4-inch dk. Green balls
into egg shapes. Insert a 1/2-inch toothpick into each side of lower body,
leaving 1/4-inch extended out on both sides. Secure small ends of each leg
to toothpicks and body, extending wide ends of legs forward so figure can
sit upright.
4. Top fins (arms) - form two 3/4-inch dk. Green balls
into 1-1/2-inch length tapered logs. Insert a 1/2-inch toothpick into each
side of upper body, leaving 1/4-inch extended out on both sides. Secure each
small end of arms (about a 1/2-inch in from each small end of the arms) to
the toothpicks and body, extending wide ends of arms forward and resting on
top of the legs.
5. Shell - mix two units of Chrome Green into a ball using
the Color Chart and Color Scale. Form ball into a 1-3/4-inch diameter circle
about 1/4-inch thick. Use the clay knife tool and draw a design on top of
shell. Secure shell to back of Honu evenly.
Sign:
1. Sign base - mix a 3/4-inch ball of white clay with a 1-inch ball of
dk. Brown clay slightly to make a marbleized look in the clay. Roll clay out
evenly flat to about a 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out a 1-inch x 2-1/2-inch
rectangle. Press edges evenly and indent lines with clay knife tool around
all four edges.
2. Letters - mix one unit of Meadow Green using the Color
Chart and Color Scale. Form clay mix into a ball and roll into a even log
about 1/8-inch thick. Cut out segments to form the letters ALOHA and place
them on to the front of the sign evenly. Using the clay knife tool press
lines into each letter to form a design and secure it to the sign. Insert a
1/4-inch toothpick into each wide end of arm leaving 1/8-inch extended out
on each toothpick. Secure Aloha sign to Honu.
3. Mini Plumeria flower - form five 3/16-inch white (or
choice of color) balls into teardrop shapes and press slightly flat. Using
the small end of the round flower shaping tool press into wide end of each
petal. Secure one petal at a time (wide end facing out) to one corner of the
sign making sure to slightly overlap each petal with the next. Gently press
the center of the flower with the round flower shaping tool as you place
each petal down (make sure last petal joins to the first petal). Shape
petals to form the flower. Place another flower on the other end of the sign
or on the side of the honu's head.
